Cutting the Cord with the Broncolor Siros L

For the last 25 years I have worked as a photographer as well as assisted many photographers. During that time, the technology and equipment used has changed greatly. But the one thing that hasn’t changed, is the client’s demand for quality images!

Quality images for me can mean many different things: accurate color fidelity, beautiful light, and great subject matter. Perhaps most of all, a quality image is being able to capture the moment in time when all the components of the image come together. The “decisive moment”, as they say. In order to achieve these qualities, most photographers have always relied on AC powered flash power packs. Traditionally, if one demanded superior performance and reliability, they were the only game in town.

But technology brings change, and proof is the latest development from Broncolor, the Siros L. This new light is the culmination of years of experience making what is widely acknowledged to be the “best of the best” in terms of photographic lighting equipment.

The Siros L is a lithium battery powered self-contained flash unit. Its specs leave nothing to be desired, it has all the qualities and features one would expect from a top of the line power pack plus the huge advantage and convenience of no more power cords! The Siros L is available in both a 400 and 800 watt-second versions. The 800 watt-second version is the first of its kind on the market, giving you enough power to shoot in full sun and be able to fill in the light beautifully. Some highlights of both units include constant color temperature over the entire control range, super-short flash durations, recycling as fast as 0.03 seconds, LED modelling light, exposed flash tube, nine stops of power adjustment, seventy-minute battery charge time, and 440 flashes at full power per battery.

One of my favorite features is the built in Wi-Fi which allows full remote control via the free “bronControl” app for smartphone or tablet devices. I set up my iPad on a light stand next to the camera and I can completely control the power of the lights either individually or in groups. Clients love it because it looks so slick, I love it because there are no cables all over the floor, and no more bending over or reaching up to make slight adjustments in power!

Lastly, one of the greatest things about Broncolor is the amazing range of light modifiers available, especially the Para reflectors. Those things are truly magic, if you haven’t used one yet you owe it to yourself to try it. Since I have made the switch to the Siros L I can honestly say that I have not looked back, which is good because I wouldn’t want to trip over a power cord!

Workshop: Rosanne Olson on Analyzing—and Recreating—Every Kind of Light

Posted by on Tuesday February 27, 2018 | Lighting

Commercial and fine-art photographer Rosanne Olson recalls that when she started her career as a newspaper photographer, “I knew nothing about lighting.” Everything changed when she took a lighting workshop with Gregory Heisler, who taught her and other students “to work simply and with minimal lighting equipment,” and to blend strobe with ambient light.
