TOMORROW! Columbia College Chicago is hosting an informal portfolio review for their graduating photography students from 5-8pm tomorrow, May 16. Creative professionals are invited to go check out the work of this group of young photographers. The Philadelphia Photo Arts Center is holding their fourth annual Book Fair. Participants include MACK Books, Printed Matter, Vox Populi, Light Work and Houseboat Press, among many others. It’s a fair of photo books. Nuff said.

This is very cool: United Photo Industries and New York Waterway’s East River Ferry people are partnering to exhibit photographs on weekday ferries throughout the summer. Aperture and Paris Photo Announce First PhotoBook Prize, PhotoBook of the Year

Paris Photo and the Aperture Foundation announced the winners of the first annual Paris Photo Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards today.

The First PhotoBook Award went to Dutch photographer David Galjaard for his self-published book Concresco, about the remaining cold-war-era bunkers that dot the Albanian landscape. Open to all new bookmakers, the award includes a $10,000 prize.

The PhotoBook of the Year award went to Anders Peterson for his City Diary (Volumes 1-3), which were designed by Greger Ulf Nilson and published by Steidl, and which depict the gritty sides of St. Petersburg, Stockholm and Tokyo.

In the fall edition of Aperture’s Photobook Review, which announced the shortlisted books, the descriptions of the two eventual winners highlighted not only the content of the images, but the quality of the bookmaking.

Concresco is a consistently and elegantly rendered physical object,” the short review pointed out. “This three-volume set of soft-cover paperbacks with gatefold-like flaps is densely printed on every surface,” a review noted of Petersen’s City Diary. “The ink fumes that emanate from the rough-cardboard envelope that acts as packaging are fittingly as strong and musky as the photographs themselves.”

The prizes were awarded by a jury that included Roxana Marcoci, curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Thomas Seelig, curator and curator of collections at the Fotomuseum Winterthur, Winterthur, Switzerland; Britt Salvesen, curator and head of the Wallis Annenberg Department of Photography and the department of prints and drawings at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Els Barents, director of the Huis Marseille Museum for Photography; and Timothy Prus, curator of AMC Books, selected the winners for both prizes.

All of the 30 books shortlisted for these prizes will be exhibited at Aperture in New York and will then tour to colleges, libraries and public exhibition space. To review the full shortlist visit The PhotoBook Review site here.

Paris Photo Comes to Los Angeles April 2013

Californians: Have you ever wanted to attend Paris Photo, but couldn’t face the airfare, jet lag, or chance of a general strike?  Paris Photo, the international art fair, will launch its first event in the US next year. The organizers of Paris Photo, which is managed by Reed Expositions France, yesterday announced the creation of Paris Photo L.A., featuring roughly 80 French and international galleries exhibiting inside the 100-year-old Studios at Paramount in Los Angeles from April 24 to 28, 2013.

Paris Photo, which takes place each November in Paris, includes an art fair that last year lured 140 galleries to exhibit at the Grand Palais, plus portfolio reviews, the Aperture Photobook Awards, and a lot of networking opportunities in venues around the city. In the car-dependant city of Los Angeles, the fair will be centered on a single, sprawling location. A full schedule of events and a list of exhibitors will be announced this fall.

The timing of the fair looks likely to overlap with the Month of Photography Los Angeles (MOPLA), which was launched in 2009 to showcase the Los Angeles photo community through interconnected exhibitions, seminars and a portfolio review.

Cartier-Bresson Photo Sets Record at Christie’s Auction in Paris

Christie’s took advantage of the interest surrounding Paris Photo last week by holding three auctions at their Paris auction house, one of which saw a photograph by Henri Cartier-Bresson fetch a record price for the photographer of $590,455.

The record-breaking 1946 print of Derrière la Gare Saint-Lazare, Paris, 1932, the famous photograph of a man jumping over a puddle, was part of an auction of 100 photographs from the collection of the Foundation Henri Cartier-Bresson. The sale more than doubled the $243,000 high estimate for the print. Total sales for the auction reached $2,818,097.

A sale of 51 Irving Penn prints from an unnamed private collection generated $2,848,546. The highest sale at the auction was $492,273, paid for Penn’s Woman in Moroccan Palace (Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn), 1951.

The top two sales in the general photography auction also belonged to Penn prints. The still life Two Liqueurs, New York, 1951, and Mouth, New York, 1986, both earned more than $200,000. A pair of Peter Beard prints were the next highest sales. The auction of 56 lots brought in $2,320,576.
