New York Mag Wins ASME’s Cover of the Year for Post-Sandy Issue

Iwan Baan‘s iconic aerial photograph of a blacked-out lower Manhattan in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Sandy helped New York magazine earn top honors in the American Society of Magazine Editors Cover of the Year contest for 2012. The New York cover also won in the News and Politics category.

A majority of the winning covers and finalists featured photographs or photo-based illustrations.

The finalists for Cover of the Year included Harper’s Bazaar‘s cover featuring a Terry Richardson photograph of Gwyneth Paltrow, and TIME‘s Martin Schoeller-photographed cover showing a woman breast-feeding a 3-year-old boy. The Harper’s Bazaar cover won in the Fashion and Beauty category.

The New York Times Magazine‘s Finlay MacKay-photographed cover featuring Jerry Seinfeld won in the Entertainment and Celebrity category.

The Times Magazine was also recognized in the Sport and Adventure category for its cover featuring Damon Winter‘s portrait of Venus and Serena Williams.

The cover of the New York magazine Sex Issue, which won in the Lifestyle category, featured a photograph by Tim Flach.

And a food photograph by Johnny Autry graced the Garden & Gun cover that won in the Most Delicious category.

Paul Hansen of Dagens Nyheter Wins POYi Newspaper Photographer of the Year

Paul Hansen, photographer with the newspaper Dagens Nyheter of Sweden has been named the 2012 Newspaper Photographer of the year in the 70th Pictures of the Year International (POYi).

Hansen was honored for a portfolio that included coverage of the conflict in Gaza and a series on individuals whose lives were affected by the mass murders on the Norwegian island of Utoya in July 2011.

Damon Winter of The New York Times won second place. Dave Weatherwax of The Herald in Jasper, Indiana, won third place.

The judging of the POYi awards takes place over a three-week period. The Freelance/Agency Photographer of the Year category will be judged on Sunday, Feb. 17.

The POYi awards for portrait, campaign, spot news and feature photography were announced last week.

Damon Winter of New York Times Wins 2011 POYi Multimedia Portfolio of the Year

Damon Winter of The New York Times has won the POYi Multimedia Portfolio of the Year award in the final session of judging at the POYi competition. See the full report is at poyi.org.

Winter was honored for a portfolio of work that included video and stills for “Finding Purpose After Living With Delusion,”, about a man living with schizophrenia, “Sky Cowboys,” about the iron workers rebuilding 1 World Trade Center, and for his contributions to the interactive feature “A Year at War, Coming Home,” about a US batallion’s deployment and return.

Other winners in the multimedia division of the competition include Time magazine, which won the Documentary Project of the Year award for “Beyond 9/11,” a project by photographer Marco Grob for the tenth anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks. Time magazine also won the News Multimedia Story award for a project about the uprising in Egypt shot by contract photographer Dominic Nahr.

Other winners included Alfonso Moral and Roser Corella, who won the Long-Form Multimedia Documentary Award for this project called “Machine Man,” about manual laborers in Bangladesh:

The Issue Reporting Multimedia Story award went to freelancers Elles Van Gelder and Ilvy Njiokiktjien for this project called “Afrikaner Blood,” about extremists clinging to South Africa’s apartheid past:

Reporter Corinne Reilly and photographer Ross Taylor of the Virginia Pilot won the Feature Multimedia Story award for this story called “Home | Front” about a Virginia family separated by the war in Afghanistan:
