We’re Sorry to See You Go, American Photo and Popular Photography

We’re sad to report that American Photo and Popular Photography, two venerable publications for photographers and photo enthusiasts, have ceased publication. In an email sent to staff yesterday, Eric Zinczenko, chief executive officer at Bonnier, which has owned the magazine since 2009, cited “insurmountable losses in advertising and audience support” as the reasons for the decision to shutter the publications immediately. “Despite the extraordinary efforts of our committed colleagues at Popular Photography and American Photo, as well as our best attempts corporately to find a sustainable path forward, we are simply unable to overcome these market forces.”

Miriam Leuchter, editor in chief of American Photo and Popular Photography, yesterday told contributing writers (many of whom write for PDN and Rangefinder) that the March/April 2017 issue of Popular Photography would be its last. After Friday March 10, no new content will be posted to the websites of American Photo or Popular Photography. (American Photo ceased publishing in print in 2014, but continued to publish online until yesterday.)

Popular Photography (fondly referred to as Pop Photo), was founded in 1937. American Photo was launched under the name American Photography in the late 1970s, with the mission to create “a new literature of photography.” In 2009, Hachette Filipacchi Media sold the publications to Bonnier Corporation, which owns Popular Science, Saveur, Field & Stream and other magazines.

In email,  Zinczenko noted, “Since 2009, Miriam and team have consistently produced best-in-class content, giving their audience of photo enthusiasts industry-leading product reviews, smart service journalism and, of course, terrific photography.”

We agree. We look forward to seeing the perspectives of these talented writers and editors in their future endeavors.
