Samsung-NX30-18-55mm_003_Right-Angle1_blackSamsung was first out of the gate this morning with new photo announcements ahead of next week’s Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The company just unveiled four new photo products: the 20.3-megapixel NX30 mirrorless compact system camera; two new lenses for the NX camera system; and a new wirelessly connected Galaxy Camera 2.

The NX30, which uses an APS-C-size CMOS sensor similar to what you’d find in entry-level digital SLRs, is the follow-up to the NX20 we reviewed in 2012. Like its predecessor, the NX30 offers a variety of WiFi-connectivity features including new Dropbox and Flickr integration.

The NX30 also has a fully swiveling 3.0-inch AMOLED display on back to help you compose images from a variety of angles. Samsung says the new rear screen is 30% brighter than the previous model.

The NX30 also, for the first time, features a pull-out electronic viewfinder, which you can lift away from the camera body and tilt at up to an 80-degree angle. The pull-out EVF and a new 3.5-inch microphone port are designed to help you shoot richer movie clips with the camera’s full HD video function. There’s also an in-camera Audio Level Meter and Input Level Adjustments for better sound. The NX30 lets you live stream your video via the HDMI port to share your footage on an external monitor.

Other hardware and wireless features of the Samsung NX30 include the following:

• 9 frames per second burst shooting
• 1/8000/s shutter speed
• ISO 120-25600 range
• Tag & Go feature to share images and video quickly to NFC-enable devices with a tap of the camera
• Photo Beam feature lets users to share images with a tap from the mobile device to the camera.
• Group Share feature lets users simultaneously share images with up to four devices near the camera
• Remote Viewfinder Pro app lets you adjust settings including zoom, or trigger the camera wirelessly from a smartphone or tablet device

Samsung-NX30_01The Samsung NX30 is expected to sell for around $1,000. Samsung also announced two new lenses that pair with the NX30 and the company’s other NX-series cameras:  the new 16-50mm F2.0-2.8 “S” lens, which has a metal build that is splash- and dust-proof and Optical Image Stabilization; and the 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 Power Zoom ED OIS lens. Pricing for these lenses had not been set at press time.

Samsung also unveiled its new Galaxy Camera 2 this morning, which is designed to combine aspects of a high-end compact camera with the image sharing capabilities of a smartphone. The 16MP Galaxy Camera 2 has a 22x optical zoom, a flexible tilting flash, and a bigger battery for more shooting time. It also has a new 1.6GHz Quad Core processor and 2 gigabytes of RAM for faster speed; and runs the latest Android operating system: the 4.3 JellyBean platform.

Samsung-Galaxy-Camera-2-8The biggest change to the Galaxy Camera 2, however, is that while it has full wireless functionality, Samsung is no longer offering the model with 3G or 3G cellular connectivity. The company found that the previous version of the Galaxy Camera with cellular connectivity was not a big seller, since it required users to purchase a separate data plan from AT&T.  The Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 is expected to sell for $449.
