Canon Issues Advisory on Exposure Metering Problem for 5D Mark III DSLR (UDPATED)

Canon’s 22.3MP EOS 5D Mark III full-frame digital SLR has received a lot of early reviews but this can’t be the type of buzz the company hoped for.

Today, Canon released the following advisory for the 5D Mark III, noting that in extremely dark conditions, the LCD panel can cause what appears to be a metering issue that can affect the displayed exposure value. The exposure fluctuation may occur “as a result of the AE sensor’s detection of light from the LCD panel,” according to Canon.

[...] Canon’s on a bit of a roller coaster lately, so the next few stories are about them. We start with the bad news: looks like there is a light leak issue with the new 5D Mark IIIs after all. [...]

  2. Lee Varis Says:

This is an exposure metering issue – saying that it is a light leak makes it sound more serious. There is no light leaking onto the sensor just the metering system is picking up enough flare from the LCD to cause exposure metering error in really dark situations. Given that the camera has extended low light sensitivity this could result in underexposing if you are relying on fully automatic exposure. It doesn’t sound like a firmware update could solve the issue but I wouldn’t totally rely on the meter in these situations anyway. Canon’s acknowledging of the issue is appropriate but I don’t think its a show stopper for the camera, just a heads up for photographers working under low light conditions—don’t expect the built-in meter to be 100% accurate in extreme low light. Hello? Did anyone really expect to trust the meter blindly under these conditions?
